Head to the Wiesbaden Ballet
Feb. 16
This Saturday, Feb. 16, the ballet (Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden) will be having our premier of "Ein Winternachtstraum." We are a contemporary ballet company centered in Wiesbaden. There are two pieces in the evening -- one by our director, Stephan Thoss, and another by a world-renowned Swedish choreographer, Johan Inger. More information can be found at our Facebook page. Art show in water tower

The artist Annette Bischoff who has her studio in the Darmstadt water tower (built in 1910) posted an invitation to an exhibition/open "water tower" house. It's a really unique location and her paintings are very colorful (see website for examples). I've been before and last time there was also music (her husband: http://www.obo-towermusic.de/). Christmas Walking Tour
Nov. 27 to Dec. 23
Enjoy a short walking tour of the Wiesbaden "Twinkling Star" Christmas Market during the holiday season. Take a look at the decorated eight-meter-high Christmas Tree in Kurhaus, the ice skating rink by the Staatstheater and explore the Christmas Market. Tours are Saturdays and Sundays at 4 p.m. in English (2 and 4 p.m. in German) and last about an hour. Meet at the main entrance of the Market Church (big red church by City Hall). Cost is €6.50 per person. Pick up tickets at the Tourist Information Office or from the guide before the tour starts. Idstein's Christmas market 2012 – three days full of living tradition

Every year, the Idstein Christmas market attracts an increasing number of happy visitors enjoying the cosy atmosphere of Idstein's old town full of half-timbered houses. Let yourself be charmed by the aromas of mulled wine, grilled sausages, sugared almonds, hot chestnuts and other treats. Get the real feel of magic when you meet the Holy Family in the living crib.If you're tired of commercialism you should go for walk through the romantic and peaceful Idstein X-mas market. Here you can listen to Christmas carols performed by a trombone choir, a brass quartet and other wind players. You are invited to savor the romantic ambience of lovely decorated wooden huts while thousands of lights are twinkling in the dark. Maybe you already find some wonderful Christmas gifts, such as crib figurines, candles, craftworks or delicious homemade "Lebkuchen" (gingerbread biscuits). Your children will love the carousels, a ride on the little steam locomotive or the puppet theatre presented by a local kindergarten. As in previous years, both – parents and kids – will have the possibility to caress a "real" angel's wing on Saturday and Sunday. In the underpass beneath city hall, the living crib with its Holy Family, with angel, king, shepherd and several animals put a smile not only on children's eyes.

English Round Table Mainz

You are interested to meet up with people from different countries, but you wish to communicate in English? No problem – the ERT Mainz (English Round Table Mainz) meets twice a month in Mainz and the “members” are from all over the world. The ERT provides the opportunity to practice or improve your English language skills or just to meet new people in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. You can shake off your daily stress with some small talk, a cold beer or a smooth wine. This very sincere statement, mailed to us by one of our long time members, sums it up the best. "Where non-native speakers get a chance to practice every-day English with patient and considerate native-speakers, giving in reverse some knowledge of local customs and habits" The ERT meets at least twice a month, every second Thursday, at different locations and every last Tuesday at our standard location. We also plan and announce special events throughout the year. The English Round Table is open to everyone, from "Native-speaker" to "Vacation-speaker". We have only one rule! Naturally, we all speak English! So call the baby-sitter, throw away the remote control(s), turn off the PC and come join us for some laughs and a good time. The English Round Table is FREE! There are NO registration or membership fees, ever. Let us introduce our little town to you and the American military community! We are convinced there are a lot of good reasons to get to know our enchanting small town with its beautiful half-timbered houses. It is not only Idstein historic center, perfect for strolling and lingering, its witches' tower (dating from 1170), the "Tournesol" adventure pool or the Idstein golf club that attract numerous visitors, there are also a large variety of events coming up throughout the year (wine festival in May; famous jazz festival June 21 - 23). What about enjoying the cosy atmosphere of a traditional German Christmas Market? From Nov. 30 until Dec. 2 you can experience the Holy Family, ox and sheep in a "living crib"! It takes you only about 30 minutes to reach Idstein - wether you take the car, bus or train. We would like to invite your soldiers, civil army employees and their families to visit Idstein. Which options do you see to send or distribute our information (written invitation and flyers providing general tourist information in English language) to those families? Would it be possible to hand out those flyers on the Airfield? Or maybe you have another idea how we can get into contact with your families? Did we arouse your curiosity? Guided ghost hunts at haunted castles in Germany

Spend one of the most exciting nights of your life within the walls of a haunted castle in Bavaria, Germany. After having a delicious meal prepared using historical recipes from the Renaissance or Baroque period, experience a real ghost hunt with our team of paranormal investigators from the TAPS family. Fürsteneck Castle, as seen on one of the most popular ghost hunting series on TV, is said to be haunted by multiple ghosts. One of them is a white lady, who was sighted many times during the last centuries. There’s also the story of a witch, who was convicted and burned at the stake at the castle in 1703. She’s said to haunt the castle to get her revenge. And not to forget the ghost of a restless prince-bishop, who still roams the woods around the castle to purge for the sins he committed during his lifetime. Ghostly experiences were reported from the tenants, visitors and staff of the castle restaurant.
Neuburg Castle was built in 1050. It was visited by emperors and saints. But not only its history is exciting but also its ghosts. There are several legends about this castle, starting from a mysterious blood painting on the prison wall to the infamous “ghost room”, a haunted tunnel and many other haunted spots throughout this huge building. Many visitors have had strange experiences like being touched by invisible hands, big floating light balls they saw with their naked eye, strange noises, “conversations” with the other side by help of the K 2-metre or knocks… If you dare you can also spend a night at one of the castle’s hotel rooms. Who knows, maybe your room is one of the most haunted in this building?

Now its the end of summer and that means Apples, Pumpkins, Pears, and many other wonderful things. We would like to introduce you to our local farm in Mainz where you can pick your own fresh apples.Come in the morning, afternoon or on the weekend, grab a wheel-barrel and spend a few hours wandering through the orchard. There are Apple trees, Walnuts, a shop where you can buy local fruits, pumpkins and fresh apple juice, a picnic area and sometimes open lessons we make Apple Juice. Mountain biking around Wiesbaden

We are a group of German mountain bikers who want to offer the possibility to join us. We meet most Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the end of the Nerotal, and mostly on Sundays between 10 and 11 a.m. On Wednesdays the tour is not longer than about 15–20 miles doing that with moderate speed, fun is first. And by this not forgetting a cold beer after it. We are all in an age between 33 to 43 years, so everybody who wants to see the “mountains” around Wiesbaden on his or her bike, is very welcome. Running, jumping, shooting, crafts — Cub Scouts from the Kaiserslautern Community may earn a gold medal in fun at the Cublympics Day Camp at Pulaski Park, between Pulaski Barracks and Vogelweh the week of August 14-17.
This summer, the Transatlantic Council, Boy Scouts of America offers a healthy living, exciting, fun-filled and educational day camp experience in the great outdoors for Tiger Cubs, Wolf, Bears and Webelos Scouts and boys age 7-11 or who will be entering first through fifth grade in the fall. Cub Scouts will experience a week of dynamic, high-energy learning and fun, while discovering many secret and hidden mysteries by shooting BB guns, launching arrows, hiking, climbing and learning crafts at the weeklong event. For many of the Cub Scouts, the highlight of the week will be the Mysterious Game.

DHC Wiesbaden, Deutscher Hockey Club Wiesbaden, has five senior teams and about 10 junior teams (boys and girls, aged from 5-17). We play our outdoor season from April to October at Sportplatz Kleinfeldchen, Hollerbornstr. 11 on a traditional grass field; however it will soon be changed to an astroturf. The indoor hockey season training takes place in Sporthalle Klarenthal, Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse. Our women's team plays in the highest league of Hessen (Oberliga). Our men's team is in the second league (1. Verbandsliga). We also have a womens and mens +40 team as well as a mixed senior social team playing for fun and a bit of excercise. All our junior teams participate in various competitions. We have a familiar, friendly and homley club atmosphere and always welcome new club members. There is no admission fee. A special offer to recover and experience nature in front of your home. Good signposted and easy to reach by foot or bicycle. Til now there are 350 km with 180 destinations finished and in a circle from Frankfurt “Greenbelt” to Rüdesheim (Rheingau), Wetterau, the hessian Ried to the East at Kinzigtal easy reachable. You can hop off at one of the nice little German towns to enjoy local food and drinks or book one of the tours published at our website (in german).

Help maintaining your own garden while in Germany

I live in Nordentadt and last year got together with the Germans and maintained a garden from spring to October. It was wonderful. The German owners of the farm planted 20 some different vegetables and provided everything. All we had to do was water, weed and harvest the vegetables. They sent out newsletters and kept us updated on the garden (in German though). With more Americans, I think they would put it in English. I believe they have these gardens throughout Wiesbaden and it is a great way to have contact with the Germans while having nice fresh seasonal vegetables.
The one in Nordenstadt is getting ready to have a meeting. I think this meeting will give out information on all the plots in Wiesbaden or the person can find out the closest one to them. Contact information is:

Fall is here and that means apples, pumpkins, and many other wonderful things. I would like to introduce you to a small local farm in Mainz where you can pick your own apples. Come in the morning, afternoon or on the weekend, grab a wheelbarrel and spend a few hours wandering through the orchard. There are apple trees, pears, walnuts, a picnic area and sometimes open lessons on how they make apple juice.

The University of Mainz (Department of English and Liguistics, Research Group Neurokognitive Gundlagen sprachlicher Universalien) is looking for American English native speakers who would participate in an empirical psycholinguistic study (method: combined EEG and eye-tracking).
Participants should be between 18-30 years of age, right-handed, and a native English speaker from the United States (raised monolingually). Participation takes about two hours and participants receive €7 per hour.

How could I go about having you add a wonderful Café to your outstanding selection? They have a variety of things on the menu including American BBQ Grilled right in front of you. They are offering a very large screen located on the café terrace for viewing the world soccer games for the next few weeks along with live entertainment. 'Spirit of New Orleans' American-style restaurant

I recently opened an American-style restaurant (Hessenstrasse 17d, 65719 Hofheim-Wallau - Opening hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday; Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.). The name of the restaurant is "Spirit of New Orleans" and I serve traditional Louisiana-style food. I am originally from Louisiana and formally worked for MWR, but since 1998 I run my own business on the German side (Cateringservice & Restaurant). As a specialty I do fish and shrimp fry every Friday. It will be served with collard greens and cornbread. Next to ribs, fried chicken, burgers, etc. I hope I made your mouth water :-) During the summer I organize public barbecues at the Harley Garage in Wallau (Address: Werner- von Siemensstrasse 4-6; 65719 Hofheim-Wallau). I’ve seen posts about American Baseball in Homburg etc.. but just wanted to share that there’s Bundesliga Baseball in Mainz which has been around since 1988. They won the first German Title in 2007 and have a lot of good talent.. This year we have 3 Japanese International players on the team, which it changes every year.. Anyways, if you need more information I would be glad to point you in the right direction or fill in the blanks.. I have just returned to Germany and was involved with the club for 10 years..
NOTE: The first game is this weekend which happens to be “away” but the first home game is on April 10th. The club has 4 mens leagues to include kids leagues as well and Americans are more than welcome to join..

I recently saw a copy of your Things To Do publication and wanted to ensure that you and your readers were made aware of FEATS 2010 – The annual Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies.
Briefly, FEATS is continental Europe’s largest (and, of course, best) English-language theatre festival. It takes place over four days in a different city every year, and will be in Bad Homburg for the fourth time since 1991. 12 groups from all over Europe take part in a spirit of friendly competition. Each group performs a one-act play under the watchful eye of a professional adjudicator, who reviews each play in public and awards prizes on the last night. The European Space Center in Darmstadt theater presents “Our Country’s Good” a play by Timberlake Wertenbaker, Dec. 3, 4, and 5. The performance on these days is in English and for mature audiences. "Our Country’s Good" is set in the late 1780s and tells the heart-rending story of British convicts and Royal Marines transported to Australia to establish the first penal colony.

The Choir will present an interesting and unusual selection of international love songs, including Brahms’ “Neue Liebeslieder” in waltz meter, popular songs from well-known musicals or the musical setting of a French poem by Rilke. A variety of songs sung by soloists and small groups of singers from among the members of the choir will round off the program. Musical accompaniment will be provided for the Choir by pianists Jim Schar and Margaret Busby. Two nearby must-see gardens to visit this time of year:
In Wiesbaden in the Aukamm area on Aukammallee right across from the Deutche Klinik fur Diagnostik is the extensive Apothekergarten. It is at its peak this time of year (late July). Beware if you are allergic to or afraid of bees however – it is buzzing with them but beautiful and interesting. Water lilies are in bloom in the little pond right now. It is a peaceful place to walk, sit, and relax and learn about the healing qualities of different plants. It is nearby and free! See www.apothekergarten-wiesbaden.de for information.
Also, a little drive but worthwhile is the Kloster Garden in Seligenstadt , a former Benedictine monastery. The garden here include topiary fruit trees, beds of colorful flowers and espalied fruit trees. It is near Hanau and information about this lovely town is available at www.seligenstadt.de The garden is free. There is a beautiful Basilica and an extensive Herb Garden in addition to the formal Baroque style garden beds. It is a feast of color for the eyes!

Herewith I would like to use this opportunity to contribute a suggestion for “Things to do” in August:
From Saturday 28.08. to Sunday 30.08.2009 the Burgfest in Eppstein (Taunus, approx.30 minutes north of Wiesbaden) takes place:
On Saturday the festivity starts at 18.00h with a live band playing in the castle main yard. In the former great hall (the Palas) of the castle will be a vine & Sekt (sparkling vine) bar serving various vines from Rheingau. At the same time in one of the outer courtyards the “Landsknechte” will serve dark beer from Franconia from wooden casks, spare rips, and grilled steaks. If you prefer typical Hessian cuisine: food and self made apple vine will be served by the Stadtwache in the Mainzer Keller, one of the castle’s cellars. For those preferring cocktails: There is also a cocktail bar on one of the platforms overlooking the main yard.
While Saturday is more a day for partying and to enjoy a pint, the activities on Sunday focus on the family live: The days starts at 11.00h with a Jazz- Band in the main yard (until 13.00) followed by a Rock-Ensemble. Coffee and self made cake will be available in the Kemenate (another part of the castle’s quarters). In the outer court yard will be a flee market for kids (toys & the like) and some games for small children (starting at 09.00h to 13.00h). From 13.00h on there will be some history made tangible: a small medieval camp in the Palas garden showing copies of 13th century medieval armoury . In the Mainzer Keller puppeteers will show a quite “political” story for children: Die Tier–Republik (The Animal Republic) (show at 14.00h and at 15.30h). For adults the Palas vine and sparkling vine bar will be open. Apart from that the castle’s museum and the baroque- Altangarten are open from 11.00h to 17.00h. At 17.00h the castle will close its gates.
Entrance is Saturday and Sunday (Saturday entrance includes Sunday) 4 Euro, Sunday 2 Euro for adults and juveniles, kids smaller than “sword-height” are free of charge.

Brodhecker Burghof is the Best Place in Germany to learn to Ride Horses!!!
They are located near the Dagger Complex, between Riedstadt and Griesheim (see attached map).
They have THREE indoor riding halls, so it is available year-round!
They have many different times available for those unusual work schedules, including Evening classes, Saturdays and Events.
They can accommodate all ages, from 3 and up.
They have SPECIAL EDUCATION RIDING for handicapped students, and are fully certified to teach at all levels.
They speak English or German.
They have in-house shows for those who just want to go and watch.
They serve a fantastic home-made lunch on Saturdays, all farm fresh foods.
The prices are very good, cheaper than riding in Wiesbaden, and they can accommodate more riders than the reitanlages here.
I have been riding there for two years, and can definitely recommend them for both adults and children of all riding abilities!!!

equipment or toys.

Once again Mainz has proven itself to be a very shopper friendly city going above and beyond to provide an attractive, fun, and well thought out Christmas market. The market itself is in the shopping district with a grant entrance. The entrance to the market opens facing the Mainz Opera House and is bordered by two very large Christmas trees created out of light. Just past these, there city has erected a giant traditional German Christmas carousel (The kind you would put candles around and the heat would make the fan blades at the top spin, which in turn, spin the entire contraption). There are plenty of vendors selling everything from hand made jewelry, to traditional German Christmas decorations and knick-knacks, spices, hot glühwein, roasted chestnuts, and just about everything else you can think of. Since the vendors are in the shopping district, they are surrounded by the normal Mainz shops who are offering some very attractive sales right now. As for bathroom services, the Kaufhof department store offers restrooms on the 2nd floor for public use, simply drop a coin or two as a tip for the cleaning person. I personally have always preferred Mainz to Wiesbaden for shopping mostly because I am not a member of the ultra rich, whom Wiesbaden seems to play towards mostly. Mainz is a more friendly, down to earth City, with real people, and real fun. I highly recommend their Christmas market.

I am extremely proud of our PAO. Each of the staff members go above and beyond to make sure the community is informed and in-touch with what is going on both in and outside of our community. They are also extremely helpful and cooperative when asked for assistance and ideas. I especially enjoy the article Anemone sends out each Friday entitled 'Things to Do'. Often I have selected an activity from this page, which my family has greatly enjoyed. I look forward to this article every Friday. (Note: Things to Do is now sent weekly on Thursday. I appreciate the information in the Things to Do newsletter. However, you should know that the Christmas Market of Nations in Rüdesheim is REALLY the worst Christmas market I have ever been to. The people are selling plastic spongebob stuff, cheesy t-shirts, etc. Why are you promoting this one so heavily??

Ice skating at Wiesbaden Christmas Market

"I love the way Wiesbaden sets up its ice skating rink at the Hessen State Theater every year around Christmas time. People can enjoy the Wiesbaden Christmas Market which runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 23 downtown while their kids go skating on the outdoor rink. The rink opens Nov. 29 and stays open through the holidays to Jan. 11. People can either bring their own skates or rent them at the rink. What's also cool is that stores in downtown Wiesbaden stay open until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday during the holiday period, Nov. 24 to Dec. 30."
