Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens

The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to practice caution in light of potential demonstrations in Djibouti following the events unfolding in the world, including a video circulating on the internet and the recent publication of cartoons in France.

U.S. Embassy Djibouti is monitoring the situation closely, including the potential for protests in response to these events.  Currently, no demonstration permits have been granted by the Government of Djibouti.  We continue to monitor the possibility that spontaneous protests could occur in parts of the city on Friday, September 21, or in the following days.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.  U.S. citizens are urged to avoid areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.  If you inadvertently end up in the midst of one, extricate yourself as quickly and safely as possible and maintain a low profile.  If you witness any suspicious activity, please dial 18 to report it to the police.  We will notify U.S. citizens of security threats as we become aware of them. 

If you live in or travel to Djibouti, please take the time to tell us about your trip by enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  If you enroll, we can keep you up to date with important safety and security announcements.  It will also help your friends and family get in touch with you in an emergency.  You should remember to keep all of your information in STEP up to date.  It is important during enrollment or updating of information to include your current phone number and current email address where you can be reached in case of an emergency.
