Dr. Hector Lopez is a Program Director in the Division of Applied Science and Technology
at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), and
directs the extramural ultrasound research portfolio, as well as the radiographic
imaging research portfolio. He received the Doctor of Science degree in Biomedical
Engineering from the George Washington University in 1990. Before joining NIBIB,
he worked for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Devices and Radiological
Health (CDRH), where he conducted research in development of methods and tools for
the objective measurement of imaging system performance. His research also included
development of innovative ultrasound imaging techniques and measurement methods
in the body. His current research interests include ultrasound imaging and ultrasound
therapy applications, as well as radiological imaging, signal detection and processing,
and diagnostic imaging system performance metrics. He has actively participated
in professional societies, and in 1995 was elected Fellow of the American Institute
of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), and served as chairman of the AIUM Technical Standards
Committee from 1999-2001, as well as chairman of Working Group 9 of the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) from 1999-2004. He is also a member of the American
Association of Physicists in Medicine.
