INDONESIA’S CHALLENGE

In the 12 years since Reformasi, Indonesia has emerged as a regional leader in democracy and is globally recognized for its diversity and pluralism.   However, challenges remain and democratic governance has yet to produce tangible benefits for many Indonesians.

A USAID PARTNERSHIP WITH INDONESIA

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is partnering with Indonesian communities, government, and civil-society organizations to meet these challenges.  Through targeted investments, USAID is providing assistance in five areas.

ANTI-CORRUPTION

• Bolster the capacity of government institutions to prevent, expose and punish corruption and other abuses of power
• Strengthen the capacity of the media, NGO and citizens “watchdog” groups, which have important roles to play in accountability at all levels

RULE OF LAW

• Assist the Supreme Court and Attorney General’s Office reforms in developing a more accountable and effective justice system
• Support NGOs, think tanks and professional groups that monitor and advocate for justice sector reform  
• Strengthen future prospects for the rule of law through policy-oriented legal research and legal education

LOCAL GOVERNANCE AND SERVICE DELIVERY

• Assist national and local governments, local councils and civil society to improve incentives for better local government performance and adopt innovative service delivery approaches
• Support local government efforts to increase access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation

EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATION BY LEGISLATURES, CIVIL SOCIETY, POLITICAL PARTIES

• Improve the policy-making capability of legislative bodies, civil society organizations, universities and think tanks 
• Strengthen connections between representative institutions (legislatures, civil society and political parties) and Indonesian citizens

SUPPORT FOR PEACE AND PROMOTING DEMOCRATIC CULTURE

• Support for civil society organizations and government institutions in promoting and protecting citizen’s rights 
• Promote conflict-senstive approaches to development, technical capacity building, livelihood development and civil society
