NELSON LEADS HUD'S OFFICE OF ADMINISTRATION
Former Dept. of Labor official becomes HUD's Assistant Secretary for Administration

WASHINGTON - Former Labor Department official Keith Nelson was sworn in as the new Assistant Secretary for Administration at the Department of Housing and Urban Development following Senate confirmation earlier this month. As HUD's chief human capital and administrative officer, Nelson's duties will include managing the Department's human resources, training and emergency planning needs.

"I'm excited about rolling up my sleeves and getting down to the real business of making HUD work as well as it can," said Nelson. "We have truly exceptional people working at HUD who care deeply about making a real difference. In an ever-changing environment, which includes responding to the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, meeting tomorrow's human capital needs will be among my highest priorities as I move forward in my new post."

Before joining HUD, Nelson worked at the Department of Labor in a variety of capacities, including Associate Deputy Secretary for Management with management responsibility for 23 sub-agencies within the Department. Nelson also served as Acting Deputy Chief Information Officer, responsible for key department-wide information technology projects and an annual IT budget of $400 million. During his tenure, the Office of Management and Budget recognized the Department of Labor as the best-managed agency in the Executive branch.

Prior to his public service, Nelson worked at Dow Jones & Co. as a senior business manager developing strategy for Business-to-Business e-commerce. Nelson also worked as a sports reporter for the Dallas Morning News and the Tyler Morning Telegraph.

Nelson holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin, a Masters degree in journalism from University of California-Berkeley and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of California-Los Angeles' Anderson School of Management. Born in Germany, Nelson was raised in an Air Force family and lived for a time in Saudi Arabia before calling Dallas his hometown.
