Paula Tufro was named Deputy Chief of Staff in August 2012. Ms. Tufro provides strategic guidance on agency policy, programs, and interagency coordination to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. Her portfolio includes strategic coordination and communication with regard to OPIC's work in priority countries and regions including the Middle East and North Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti and India. Previously, she served as Advisor to the President & CEO of OPIC.
Prior to joining OPIC, Ms. Tufro served as Director of Advance at the Department of Commerce (DOC), where she led the planning and implementation of high-level foreign and domestic trips, as well as trade missions to China, Indonesia and India in order to advance the Administration's economic and trade policy priorities. Ms. Tufro joined the DOC from the Obama for America Campaign, where she was a member of the national advance staff, organizing and implementing nationwide political campaign events throughout the 2008 presidential election.
Ms. Tufro previously served as a Senior Program Officer at Freedom House, where she led the strategic planning and implementation of civil society strengthening, democracy promotion, and human rights initiatives. In her role, she also managed the monitoring and evaluation of the program and implementation of sub-grants, and coordinated reporting on the program impact. Ms. Tufro began her professional career at Arnold & Porter where she served as International Trade and Corporate Finance Senior Legal Assistant.
Ms. Tufro holds a Masters degree in Foreign Service with a concentration in International Development from Georgetown University, and a Bachelors degree from James Madison University. She was born and raised in Argentina and is fluent in Spanish, proficient in French and conversant in Portuguese.
