Outreach

Hurricane Hunter activity in Ceiba, Puerto Rico

Each year USGS Outreach teams in Puerto Rico visit with hundreds of school-age children and adults to provide information about water, geology, and earth science. Our activities range from designing activities and coloring books for kindergarten classes to offering presentations at conferences. We visit classrooms individually and participate in large job fairs of thousands of students. We tailor our activities to be appropriate for the different age groups and interests: coloring books and stories for small children, activities for older children, and interactive multimedia presentations for high school students and adults.

If you are a school teacher, festival/conference organizer, or civic club member/officer, we would be glad to come share the facts about water and earth science to your group. We also have material available for use by teachers, for adult reference, and for self study.

USGS Outreach Activities

Hurricane Hunter activity in Ceiba

The Puerto Rico Emergency Management Agency hosted the NOAA and the U.S. Air Force Reserve visit to the Ceiba Airport on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The USGS CWSC was invited to participate. Overall, the activity was a success. Many of the questions were about our display (put together by John - thanks!) that included a Satlink2 data collector/transmitter, a 9210B dcp, a tipping bucket raingage, a H-312 pressure transducer, a met sensor, and an antenna. We were also asked about the ADCP boat used by our data section. We also responded to questions about the USGS mission and work on the island, about our participation and importance during major catastrophic events, as well as questions about water quality. Teachers and parents asked if we could offer presentations at their schools or communities about our work and its impact. The following information was shown at this event: the RTFAS poster, maps of the stations throughout the island, photos of our work, and images of our data in the NWIS. We also took along a few boxes of literature, pens, rulers, and notepads. All gone!

Earth Day at Fort Buchanan

Since 2008 the Fort Buchanan Community and the Directorate of Public Works (DPW), Environmental Division, invites the US Geological Survey to participate in their Army Earth Day Exposition. Earth Day is a powerful reminder that we are responsible, as part of a global community, for the protection of our environment.

The DPW and Fort Buchanan make every effort to create a balance between the environment and the military mission in order to benefit today’s generation and the generation that will follow.

Drinking Water Seminar

For many consecutive years, the US Geological Survey has been participating in the Drinking Water Seminar, sponsored by the Puerto Rico Health Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Water Works Association, and the Instituto de Investigaciones Ambientales y Recursos de Agua from University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. This activity is an excellent forum where the scientific community presents the most relevant investigations in water resources for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
