Summary:

The Spouse Education Assistance Program (SEAP) is for spouses of active duty and retired Soldiers, and widows(ers) of Soldiers who died either on active duty or in a retired status. The purpose of the program is to assist spouse/widow(er) in gaining the education required to allow them to qualify for increased occupational opportunities.

Eligibility:

Spouses of Army Reserve Soldiers on federal active duty longer than 30 consecutive days under Title 10, United States Code, as well as widow(ers) of Soldiers who died on active duty are eligible for SEAP. Active Duty Reserve Soldiers must be activated under Title 10 Orders for the entire Academic Year, August - May. The applicant also must:

  • Be pursuing their first undergraduate degree at a school accredited by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Be enrolled part-time (6 credit hours per semester/term) or full time (minimum 12 credit hours per semester/term).
  • Maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicants must apply each year.

Benefit Highlights:

SEAP scholarships are awarded annually for up to four academic years to attend post-secondary school part time (minimum of 6 credit hours per semester/term) or full time (minimum of 12 credit hours per semester/term) as undergraduate level students. All students must complete an online application and submit all supporting documentation each year.

Spouse financial assistance is awarded based on relative financial need, as evidenced by income, assets, family size, special financial obligations, and circumstances.

SEAP is not an entitlement or automatically approved. SEAP does not apply to second undergraduate or graduate level courses.

Individuals who receive free tuition as a result of their employment will not receive tuition assistance from AER. However, they may apply for assistance for fees, supplies, or books (no duplicates) for classes in which they are enrolled.
