Tester: ‘Jammers an iconic part of Glacier experience’
(U.S. SENATE) - Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement after Glacier National Park announced it will retain its entire fleet of historic red buses, known as "jammers." The park initially proposed eliminating more than half of the fleet:
"The jammers have provided rides to park-goers for decades and are an iconic part of the Glacier experience. Montanans made their voices heard, and now more folks will continue to enjoy the beauty of Going-to-the-Sun Road through the windows and open roofs of the famous red buses."
The plan to rehabilitate only 15 red buses from the 33 vehicle fleet made the long-term future of the buses uncertain. An updated plan that maintains the entire existing bus fleet will be available in mid-February.
Tester's office reached out to the U.S. Park Service and urged them to retain the entire jammer fleet, particularly after the Ford Motor Company recently remodeled the buses. The buses now run on natural gas or propane and are expected to operate for many decades.
Tester is a member of the subcommittee that funds the Park Service.
