Hydrokinetic Energy: General Information

Web sites with useful generic information about hydrokinetic energy development.

Follow the links below to learn more about hydrokinetic energy and ongoing planning efforts related to hydrokinetic energy development.

Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) maintains a Marine and Hydrokinetic Technology Database which provides up-to-date information on marine and hydrokinetic renewable energy, both in the U.S. and around the world.

Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has produced an Ocean Energy Web Page that includes analysis of wave, tidal, and river in-stream energy projects. The reports describe the various devices that are being used or under development; site evaluation studies that indicate suitable locations for energy development; and an analysis of potential environmental consequences of constructing facilities in these various locations.

Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) Renewable Energy Program

The BOEMRE Renewable Energy Program establishes a program to grant leases, easements, and rights-of-way for orderly, safe, and environmentally responsible renewable energy development activities, such as the siting and construction of offshore wave and tidal energy farms. The Program embraces an approach that encompasses coordination through task forces established with state, local, and tribal governments.

Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for Alternative Energy Development on the Outer Continental Shelf

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (now the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement - BOEMRE) prepared an environmental analysis of alternative energy development on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). The analysis, which was completed in December of 2007, provides information about offshore utility-scale wind and wave energy development, the technologies, potential environmental impacts, and possible mitigation measures.

DOE Exploring Ways to Use Ocean Energy

DOE's Exploring Ways to Use Ocean Energy provides information on tidal and wave energy technologies, including a discussion of the environmental and economic challenges of deploying these systems.

Energy Planet Ocean Energy

The Energy Planet Ocean Energy is a web directory of information about all forms of ocean energy. It also has links to information on other forms of energy production.

California Energy Commission

The California Energy Commission: Ocean Energy provides information primarily related to wave energy. It includes links to several California initiatives and reports.

Green Power Marketing

Information about green power marketing is provided by NREL's Green Power Network and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership.
