DISA Launches The Forge.Mil Community Site

Fort George G. Meade, Md. - The Defense Information Systems Agency’s newest capability in the Forge.mil family of services is Forge.mil Community. Community is a social networking layer that provides additional capabilities to SoftwareForge and ProjectForge. Forge.mil Community will help users to connect, collaborate, share information and manage content and to provide a more holistic view of Forge.mil activities.

While project teams on Forge.mil tended to focus on their individual projects, the Forge.mil program office recognized a need to improve the communication between teams and individuals sharing a common purpose and those discussing and working to solve similar challenges that transcend a single project or set of projects. The ability to organize within a group or sub-community and then associate a project or a set of projects provides a broader view of software development activity to all stakeholders.

“We knew the community layer would be a tremendous benefit to our customer base by allowing users to organize around communities of interest that make sense to them, and it’s been very well accepted with more than 10,000 users added during the beta test phase,” said Forge.mil Project Manager, Dan Gahafer.

Forge.mil Community allows for the formation of groups built around communities of interest, organizations, mission areas, or specific technologies as well as groups created around topics of interest to the information technology acquisition community.

About Forge.mil

The Forge.mil mission is to improve the ability of the DoD to rapidly deliver dependable software, services and systems in support of net-centric operations and warfare. Forge.mil consists of two offerings – SoftwareForge and ProjectForge. SoftwareForge provides a free collaborative environment for shared development of DoD community source and internal open source software. ProjectForge provides teams that require greater access control with their own secure, private, web-based collaborative software development environment. ProjectForge is a fee-for-service capability delivered on-demand by DISA Computing Services and hosted in a Defense Enterprise Computing Center.

With more than 8,000 registered users working on close to 500 projects and with more than 2,700 software releases available for download, Forge.mil is available to the U.S. military, DoD government civilians, and DoD contractors, enabling organizations to save money, improve software development efficiency, and drive collaboration that helps deliver better software faster to the warfighter. To register to join the community, host a project or start your own group, visit http://www.disa.mil/forge.
