Registration at U.S. Embassies or Consulates
If you know you will be visiting Djibouti or Northwestern Somalia, you should register your information through the State Department's STEP travel registration website or visit the Embassy upon arrival.  Registration will make your presence and whereabouts known in case it is necessary to contact you for an emergency.  Create an account as a Long-term Traveler/Overseas Resident and you'll be able to return to the website at any time to update your permanent residence and contact information.

U.S. embassies and consulates help to locate U.S. citizens overseas when relatives or friends are concerned about their welfare or need to notify them of emergencies at home.  In accordance with the Privacy Act, information on your welfare or whereabouts may not be released to inquirers without your expressed written authorization.  The Department of State and U.S. embassies and consulates abroad handle more than 200,000 welfare and whereabouts inquiries a year.

For instructions on filing a welfare and whereabouts request, visit the Bureau of Consular Affairs U.S. Department of State website or call its Office of Overseas Citizens Services in the United States at 202-647-5225 during regular work hours, or 202-647-4000 for after-hours emergencies, Sundays and holidays.
