STATEMENT BY HUD SECRETARY CUOMO ON ST. PETERSBURG

WASHINGTON -- Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo today released the following statement marking the first anniversary of disturbances in St. Petersburg, FL, on October 24: * * * The federal government is committed not just to rebuilding St. Petersburg, but to building it better. We are backing this commitment not simply with words, but with action -- over $44 million in assistance to the city, which is more than double the original federal commitment.

The Federal Interagency Task Force has served as a catalyst for positive change and a partner in a rebuilding effort that is uniting St. Petersburg. This effort has harnessed the energies of people of all backgrounds, community groups, the Citizens Advisory Commission, non-profit groups, the business community, and elected officials at the local, state and federal level.

From the beginning, the Interagency Task Force was designed to bring the people of St. Petersburg together in exactly this type of partnership for community progress, and to strengthen ties between St. Petersburg and federal agencies.

Working together, we've taken important steps toward a better future for all the people of St. Petersburg. Together, we will move forward in this important effort.
