Environmental Protection Agency

For more than two decades the District has managed hundreds of millions of dollars worth of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund projects in New Jersey, accounting for a major share of the Corps’ support to the program nationwide. Current remediation efforts include Lipari Landfill; Welsbach & General Gas Mantle; Vineland Chemical Company; South Jersey Clothing/Garden State Cleaners (organic chemicals in groundwater), and Cosden Chemical and Coatings (organic chemicals in groundwater).

National Park Service

The Philadelphia District has supported the National Park Service with storm damage repairs, environmental investigation and remediation, and hydraulic studies. Of particular note is the current effort to investigate contamination at Great Kills Park in Staten Island, NY.

Homeland Security

The Corps provides a wide variety of support services to FEMA during declared disasters. We support FEMA with GIS-based technical services for flood insurance studies and hurricane evacuation plans.

Coast Guard

An important customer is the Coast Guard, who turned to us a few years ago for rehabilitation of a vertical lift bridge in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. We also provided hydrographic surveying support during their investigation of the November 2004 Athos I oil spill in the Delaware River. Our operations division, including the surveys branch, works closely with the Coast Guard to ensure open and safe navigation on the Delaware River.

Interagency Services

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District supports other federal agencies with engineering, construction and environmental services. Customers include the EPA, FEMA, Coast Guard, National Park Service, and the Federal Aviation Administration.
