Environmental Programs

Environmental photoThe Nevada Site Office’s Environmental Management Program was created to address the environmental legacy of historic nuclear weapons related activities and current programs at the Nevada National Security Site. The Program is organized into three areas, each of which ensures the health and safety of workers, the public, and the environment:

  • Investigate and determine the appropriate actions for contaminated groundwater, facilities and soils on the Nevada National Security Site resulting from historic nuclear research, development and testing (Click here to open an interactive map that provides information on these sites that have, are or will undergo environmental restoration.)
  • Permanent disposal of low-level and mixed low-level radioactive waste generated by environmental cleanup activities at the Nevada National Security Site and other Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Defense sites historically involved with nuclear weapons research, development and testing
  • Environmental protection, compliance and monitoring of the air, water, plants, animals, and cultural resources at the Nevada National Security Site
