Our Role
Ensuring Sustainability
Sustainable Transportation research is directed and funded primarily by three programs from within the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Together, the programs support EERE's sustainable mobility initiatives for a cleaner environment, stronger economy, and more secure energy future.
Through EERE's Vehicle Technologies Program, ORNL conducts significant research concerning fuels, engines, and emissions; energy storage; advanced structural and propulsion system materials; power electronics and electric motors; and policy analysis.
ORNL supports EERE's Biomass Program through R&D in biomass feedstocks and conversion technologies to help transform the nation's renewable and abundant biomass resources into cost competitive, high performance biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower.
Through EERE's Fuel Cell Technologies Program, ORNL is actively developing materials, components, and processes for fuel cell systems, materials for hydrogen delivery, new methods for hydrogen production, novel technologies for hydrogen storage, and R&D for modeling the transition to a hydrogen economy.
The Vehicle Technologies, Biomass, and Fuel Cell Technologies Programs are three of ten EERE funded programs at ORNL.
In addition to DOE support, the Department of Transportation, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Environmental Protection Agency, industry, and other partners support ORNL's research to optimize America's transportation systems.
