Smart Grid
Overview
The "Smart Grid" is a term that is loosely used to refer to efforts to modernize the existing electrical grid to address numerous issues, including but not limited to, improving the stability and security of the grid, enabling two-way (from the grid to the users, and vice-versa) information flow and communication relating to the grid and its characteristics (e.g. electricity pricing information, characteristics relating to grid outages, etc.), and enabling connecting distributed power generation equipment and energy sources such as residential photovoltaic panels or plug-in electric vehicles to the grid.
Once deployed, the Smart Grid will support connecting renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy into the electrical grid. It will create a needed infrastructure for wide-spread adoption of plug-in electric vehicles, and will create new markets for "smart" equipment, including home appliances that will be able to take advantage of varying pricing information to reduce energy consumption during peak usage times.
