Each office conducts odometer fraud investigations for criminal prosecution by the U.S. Department of Justice.  Also, our investigators assist state agencies that enforce odometer laws and regulations.

Investigations have resulted in over 245 criminal convictions in more than 30 states, with prison sentences that ranged from one month to eight years; this included criminal fines totaling over $2.8 million, and court ordered restitutions totaling over $15 million.

NHTSA notifies all victims of odometer fraud identified during the criminal investigations and advises them of their rights under the Victims Rights and Restitution Act of 1990.  Since 1993, NHTSA has notified more than 12,000 victims.
