Treatment

Treatment of young people with alcohol use problems is part of the underage drinking prevention continuum because its goal is to help them recover from and avoid alcohol use. In addition, because alcohol use by young people may be associated with other behavioral health issues, such as depression, treatment of alcohol use disorders in young people helps to prevent and reduce other disorders. Research provides information about alcohol dependence and treatment among young people. Treatment Programs and Services offers information on programs that are proving effective and where to find services.

The NSDUH Report: Perceptions of Risk from Substance Use among Adolescents
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) asks persons aged 12 to 17 (i.e., adolescents) how much they think people risk harming themselves physically and in other ways when they use cigarettes, alcohol, and illicit drugs. Response choices are (1) no risk, (2) slight risk, (3) moderate risk, and (4) great risk. This issue of The NSDUH Report presents information on perceptions of great risk from using various substances; data are examined by age and gender. The NSDUH Report: Trends in Substance Use, Dependence or Abuse, and Treatment among Adolescents: 2002 to 2007
This issue of The NSDUH Report examines trends in substance use, dependence or abuse, and treatment among adolescents aged 12 to 17. Substance dependence or abuse is defined using criteria in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which includes symptoms such as withdrawal; tolerance; use in dangerous situations; trouble with the law; and interference in major obligations at work, school, or home during the past year. Respondents also are asked about the treatment they received for a substance use problem. Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention for Youth: A Practitioner’s Guide
This guide is designed to help health care professionals quickly identify youth at risk for alcohol-related problems. Based on just two questions, one that asks about friends’ drinking and another that asks about personal drinking frequency, health care professionals can now detect risk early, in contrast to other screens that focus on established alcohol problems. This early detection tool aims to help prevent alcohol-related problems in children and youth before they start or address them at early stage. (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2011)
