SEPTEMBER: National Preparedness Month

As this summer's fires have shown, emergencies can occur instantly and without warning.  Although the occurrence of emergencies may be out of our control, having a plan to deal with them isn't.  In 2004, the month of September was declared National Preparedness Month. At that time, Governor Dirk Kempthorne marked the occasion in Idaho with an official proclamation.

National Preparedness Month is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security which coordinates with many different organizations nationwide to increase awareness of emergency preparedness.  In Idaho, preparedness events and activities are being organized through Citizen Corps. This year, it has organized the Idaho Prepared Conference in Coeur D’ Alene running September 10 to September 14. The conference is held for those involved in response to an emergency or disaster.

While community emergency response is essential for disaster relief, there are a few simple steps we can take in our homes that will better prepare us for an emergency. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Develop a family plan:  Discuss with your family what areas can be designated as meeting places and whether you have emergency contact numbers. Also, know where your children will be in case of a school evacuation.
  • Create an emergency kit:  Make a 72 hour kit that includes food, water, first-aid and blankets.
  • Be informed:  Know how to get in contact with your local emergency management offices.

Perhaps one of the most important steps you can take to better be prepared is to get involved. Become a local volunteer and get trained. Idaho Citizen Corps has created an event planning sheet which lists individual, business and community group activities that can be done so we can be more collectively prepared. As we work together in this effort, we will be able to not only help protect our family and loved ones, but our fellow Idahoans.
