USAID launched an assistance program in Moldova in 1992 to support this transition - establishing health and social safety net programs, fostering democratic processes, and helping to restructure and privatize key industries to jump-start economic growth.

USAID is working with the public and private sectors in Moldova to achieve broad-based economic growth, reduce poverty, and strengthen the market economy. USAID supports Moldova’s political transition by promoting good governance and strong democratic practices. Grassroots programs are building the capacity of local governments and citizens to deliver services to citizens, while other programs are strengthening civil society and transparent elections processes. USAID is also providing targeted support to the governance priorities of the Government of Moldova, increasing the integrity, transparency and efficiency of the judicial system...

In support of Moldova’s democratic and free-market reforms, USAID works to promote Economic Growth and to strengthen Democratic Governance.  Programs in these areas are designed to promote economic and political reforms that lay the groundwork for long-term stability. USAID’s projects are implemented in partnership with the Government of Moldova by international and local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), U.S. businesses, and U.N. agencies.
