Do Marine Musicians go to boot camp?

Yes. All Marines must complete boot camp either at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina or MCRD San Diego, California.

How can I audition?

Contact your local Marine Corps Recruiter. The Recruiter will arrange an audition with a Musician Technical Assistant (MTA) who will meet and audition you. Auditions consist of a prepared solo, major/minor scales and sight reading.

What is the School of Music like?

The Armed Forces School of Music (Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek, Virginia) is a combined service school that supports the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. The school is designed to train military musicians in preparation for their duties. Students receive individual instrumental instruction, music theory training and learn military marching band fundamentals. How many bands are there?

There are twelve bands in the Marine Corps; ten which are located in the continental United States, one in Hawaii and one in Okinawa, Japan.

Can Marines choose which band they go to?

While at the Armed Forces School of Music, Marines are given the opportunity to select where they would prefer to be stationed. Headquarters Marine Corps considers those choices along with the needs of the individual bands when assigning Marines to their first tour of duty.

Do I have to provide my own instrument?

No. The Marine Corps provides all supplies necessary to include instruments, reeds, mouthpieces, cleaning supplies, etc.

How often does the band travel?

It varies depending on which band you're stationed at, however, travel opportunities are highly likely.

What types of performances does the band support?

The band strengthens troop morale and enhances a sense of pride by supporting military ceremonies. Parades and formal concerts are among the commitments the band performs for the community. By providing support for community related obligations, the band plays a vital role in promoting patriotism throughout the country.

What does the band do in time of war?

While at war or during field exercises, the band's mission is to provide rear area security for the Headquarters element.
