Newcomer Information

Welcome to the 229th Military Intelligence Battalion and the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC).

DLIFLC offers the best foreign language training in the world.  Students face a demanding academic program and our cadre balances academic and military requirements to help us achieve our mission: Provide the Army ready Soldier linguists.

Please note the Battalion Commander's priorities and vision stated above. These ideas are the foundation of how our team supports our mission.

Keys to success in Foreign Language education and success as an Intelligence professional are a strong grasp of English and awareness of important issues effecting national security.  If you do not already do so, I urge you to begin your own program of study that includes serious news publications and the sorts of books that challenge you to understand concepts and vocabulary at college levels.  These efforts can only benefit you as you prepare to join us at DLI.

There are six companies in the battalion, consisting of a Reception and Integration Company for Soldiers coming from Basic Training, four Phase V+ Initial Entry Training Companies, and a Careerist/Staff Company.

If you would like assistance with your transition, be sure to send an e-mail to the address located at the "Contact the 229th MI Bn" link to the right. Conversely, you can contact the Battalion S1, located in Building 616 Taylor Hall during duty hours at (831) 242-5617, DSN 768-5617.

If you are not within the local area yet, be sure to check out the "Monterey Area Guide" provided as an unofficial link from the Presidio of Monterey's incoming personnel site, http://www.monterey.army.mil/About/newcomer.html. This is a very informative booklet about the local area (maps included) and should answer most of your basic questions.

You can find our Army Community Services (ACS) center across from the PX on the Ord Military Community (OMC), the old Fort Ord. They will give you a welcome packet and brief you on the many services available and local area attractions. You can contact them at (831) 242-7660, or via DSN at 768-7660.

Housing: Single E5s and below are required to live in the barracks. When the NCO barracks' occupancy rate reaches 95%, single E5s may be authorized to live off post. Contact your First Sergeant for the current NCO barracks' occupancy rate and further guidance. If accompanied (all ranks) or an unaccompanied E6s or above, you are required to coordinate with the Housing Services Office serving your new duty station before you make arrangements for renting, leasing, or purchasing any off-post housing. The Housing Services Office is located in Bldg 4250, General Jim Moore Blvd, Ord Military Community. The phone number is (831) 242-7979 or DSN 768-7979 and email address usarmy.pom.106-sig-bde.mbx.pres-dpw-housing@mail.mil. For more information visit the Presidio of Monterey Housing webpage.
