Basic Competencies

  • Identify the features of the air traffic system within your Flight Information Region (FIR)

  • Use on-station display and communications systems

  • Identify the forecast problem(s) of the day for Traffic Management Unit (TMU) Operations

  • Prepare and disseminate Center Weather Advisories (CWA)

  • Prepare and disseminate Meteorological Impact Statements

  • Coordinate product issuance with stakeholders

  • Prepare and provide flight briefings

  • Actively monitor evolving forecast problems to determine impact on existing forecast/advisory products.

  • Demonstrate an ability to train

  • Identify hubs, gates, military operating areas, airways, etc.
  • Name and locate surrounding FIRs, centers, and WFOs
  • List the major geographic features within the FIR, areas, and sectors
  • List airport specific critical weather parameters (local BPS)

    To satisfy this standard, you must be able to:

  • Issue precise CWAs that are timely and station specific
  • Issue CWAs for convective activity
  • Issue CWAs for severe or extreme turbulence
  • Issue CWAs for severe icing
  • Issue CWAs for high winds
  • Issue CWAs for low IFR
  • Issue CWAs for an adjacent CWSU when serving as it's back-up
  • Issue CWAs for any other criteria warranted in the professional opinion of the meteorologist ("station-specific point forecast")
