e-Manufacturing is a broad umbrella that includes the use of advanced and emerging information technologies to provide those within the manufacturing community (front office and back) with a broad range of capabilities, However, the term e-Manufacturing seems to have fallen into disuse as there has been little published recently. However, it is far from dead, but the "buzz words" seems to have changed to:
e-Manufactuirng information technologies will be automated, self-learning, data-driven, collaborative and highly productive. Nowhere has the face of manufacturing changed faster than it has in this one arena. Years ago we were just beginning to discuss Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), then came e-manufacturing, and today we have a whole new language using imagery such as "cloud computing," "model based enterprise," and "model based definitions." We have whole new families of technologies based on laptop computers, tablets, smart phones and other emerging devices and the ability to link and share information via the internet, intranet, and extranet. Today's managers are connected more than ever before and communicate and collaborate daily across functional and corporate boundaries using social networks like facebook, linkedin, twitters and blogs.
