U.S. State Department Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat visited Prague on March 19-20 to co-chair a negotiating session of more than 30 countries at the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  The session will focus on real estate restitution of heirless property and the reopening of claims for restitution and compensation to people who lost their property because of the Nazis between 1933-1945.

Eizenstat said that the U.S. will annually give $150,000 to the European Shoah Legacy Institute (ESLI) for the next five years.  The Czech Foreign Ministry founded ESLI in January  as a result of the Terezin Declaration, which EU representatives signed in mid-2009 to secure restitution of private property taken from Holocaust survivors.
