On Tuesday, September 27th at the U.S. Embassy’s American Center, U.S. Ambassador Norman Eisen, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman, and Managing Director of the Řež Nuclear Research Institute Miroslav Horak announced a new step in the Czech-American energy relationship. In 2010, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and then U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke signed an agreement for further cooperation on civil nuclear issues with Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Martin Kocourek.

As a result, the U.S, Czech Republic and other nations will hold a conference on nuclear safety issues. In addition, the Department of Energy will provide Czech research institutions with non-nuclear materials to assist with their research. Research institutions will also play an important role in the bilateral energy relationship by providing a grant of 10 million dollars towards continued cooperation and research and development.

Czech and American scientists will also participate in mutual education exchanges to share the latest developments of their research. These projects aim at bringing together leaders in the field of nuclear energy from both countries with the goal of developing safe and efficient nuclear power options.
