He was the guest of honor at a luncheon at this university and Highlights U.S.-Chile Cooperation on Higher Education Issues
On June 9, 2009, U.S. Ambassador Paul E. Simons was the guest of honor at a luncheon at the Universidad Tecnológica de Chile-INACAP, hosted by Rector Gonzalo Vargas Otte and Board of Directors President Gonzalo García Balmaceda.
The luncheon offered an opportunity to obtain a general overview of Chile’s major private technologically and vocationally-oriented university.
During the luncheon, which included other senior leaders of the university, discussion focused on INACAP’s linkages with U.S. higher education institutions, including the California State University System, with which INACAP has signed an agreement; the State University of New York; and the New York Institute of Technology, whose President, Dr. Edward Guiliano, offered a seminar at INACAP last year. Further initiatives in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Santiago were also discussed.
The Ambassador was accompanied by Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Laurie Weitzenkorn and by Diana López-Rey, Senior Cultural Specialist for Education Issues.
Following the luncheon, Ambassador Simons presented President Obama’s book Dreams of My Father to Mr. García Balmaceda, and in turn received a handcrafted souvenir made by artisans in the VII Region, where INACAP operates a program that supports training and development for artists and craftspersons.
