Nonimmigrant Visas

Visa Categories

Non-immigrant visas are “temporary” or “tourist” visas that allow for temporary stays in the US, even if the temporary stay is for many years.  Non-immigrant visas are primarily classified according to the principal purpose of travel. With few exceptions, non-immigrants are restricted to the activity or reason for which their visa was issued.

REMEMBER: A visa is not a guarantee of entry into the United States. Under American law, a visa is simply permission to apply for entry into the United States. Persons issued a visa are subject to inspection at the port of entry by officials of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS officers allow entry to the great majority of applicants with visas, but they also have the authority to deny admission.
