About PRTs

The mission of the Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in Iraq is aligned with President Obama’s key priority of promoting 'stability and development' at the provincial level to support a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq that is integrated into the global economy. Since November 2005, the PRTs throughout Iraq have sustained the USG’s efforts to build capacity for effective and transparent government at the provincial and local levels. PRT representatives have participated in thousands of meetings and events throughout the country with Iraqi men and women including provincial council members, local government and community leaders, civil society groups, faith leaders, entrepreneurs and students. The PRTs’ efforts provide a strong foundation throughout the provinces of Iraq for broad-based progress and greater understanding of U.S. values and policies.

In partnering with the Iraqi people toward our shared goals of long-term security and prosperity, the PRTs focus on the following areas: governance, rule of law, political and economic development, agriculture, education and culture, and public health. The PRTs seek to develop new partnerships in local Iraqi communities throughout the country, not only with government officials, but also with the Iraqi people, in order to address the pressing issues that matter most in people’s daily lives. By assisting Iraqis in strengthening the capacity of their government institutions and civil society, the PRTs deepen cooperation at the local level, build stronger relationships, encourage economic diversification and foreign investment; foster the development of transparent and accountable governance; promote rule of law; confront corruption; deliver essential public services; improve public health; and promote stability and community development.
