About this site

Introduction

The Office of Personnel Management is the focal point for providing statistical information about the Federal civilian workforce.  To satisfy customer's need for workforce data, FedScope was launched in the fall of 2000.  This online tool allows customers to access and analyze the most popular data elements from OPM's Enterprise Human Resources Integration-Statistical Data Mart (EHRI-SDM).  Customers include Federal government agencies, researchers, the media, and the general public.

This self-service tool provides access to 5 years worth of employment, accession, and separation data.  Access to detail level data is provided while protecting employee privacy and EHRI-SDM security.

The following workforce characteristics ("Who", "What", and "Where" of Federal Civilian Employment) are available for analysis:

  1. Who (about the employees)
    • Age (5 year interval)
    • Gender
    • Length of Service (5 year interval)
  2. What (about their positions)
    • General Schedule and Equivalent Grade
    • Occupation
    • Occupation Category
    • Pay Plan and Grade
    • Salary Level ($10,000 interval)
    • Type of Appointment
    • Work Schedule
  3. Where
    • Agency
    • Location (foreign, U.S. state and county)
    • Metropolitan Statistical Area

Note:  Ethnicity and Race Indicator (ERI) is now available via our new Diversity Cube.

Data Cubes/Reports

FedScope uses multidimensional data sources called "Cubes".  A data cube contains measures (data) organized into dimensions to provide fast retrieval and drill down capability.  A data cube brings together key dimensions (data elements) on the Federal workforce and lets you explore any combination of the data: up, down, and across the dimensions.  Visit our Glossary for definitions of key terms that make up a data cube.

FedScope lets you view and work with cube data in a Web browser.  A report contains:

  • a dimension line that you use to filter the data from each dimension in the cube
  • a display, which shows the data from the cube
  • in the new Enhanced interface, a dimension viewer that shows the hierarchical structure of the data
You can also use the dimension viewer to filter the data from each dimension in the cube.
  • a toolbar that you use to select different displays, apply suppression, and export or save your report

The dimension line appears at the top, the display is in the middle, and the toolbar is across the bottom of your Web browser window.  In the new Enhanced interface, the dimension viewer appears on the left of your Web browser window.

From your Web browser, you can:

  • Explore any combination of our "Who", "What", and "Where" Federal workforce characteristics: up, down, and across available dimensions (data elements)
  • Filter data
  • Compare data using quantitative measures such as:
    • Employment
    • Average Salary
    • Average Length of Service
  • Show data as actual values, or as percentages
  • Drill down to lower-level categories
  • Sort values
  • Choose the type of display, such as crosstab, pie chart, or bar chart, and the amount of data shown (suppression)
  • Swap rows and columns, and limit the number of rows and columns in the display
  • Export data, print data, and prepare bookmarks for your reports
