Marine National Monument Program
Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument
Establishment: In June 2006, Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument was established, by Presidential Proclamation, comprising several previously existing federal conservation areas including the Northwestern Hawaiian Island (NWHI) Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve, Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine Refuge, State Seabird Sanctuary at Kure Atoll and the Battle of Midway National Memorial.
Size: The total Monument area consists of approximately 139,797 square miles (362,075 square kilometers) of Pacific Ocean in the Northwestern region of the Hawaiian Archipelago.
Management: The Monument is cooperatively managed by the Secretary of Commerce (NOAA) the Secretary of the Interior (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) and the State of Hawaii, with assistance from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. World Heritage Designation: On July 30, 2010, Papahanaumokuakea was designated as a World Heritage site, further demonstrating the commitment of the United States and the state of Hawaii to conserve this important place.

Unique Features: The diverse ecosystem contained within the monument is home to many species of coral, fish, birds, marine mammals, and other flora and fauna including the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, the threatened green sea turtle, and the endangered leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles. Monument status ensures that the unique ecological, historical, scientific, educational and cultural resources contained within remain a national priority for protection and research. Monument designation also provides international, national, and local recognition of an area of special significance.
