Caption Mic by ULTECH LLC is a speech recognition captioning system that produces captions for:

Live Classroom, Meetings or Events
Live Television Broadcast
Live Webcast
Pre-produced video and Media

Caption Mic gives the user control over both the captioning process and costs. Besides making media and events accessible to deaf and hard of hearing persons, Caption Mic creates a timed text caption file which can be used to make more video compliant with the FCC captioning requirements. Captions also help you meet the government Section 508 guidelines for media accessibility. And the timed text file creates data which you can use to index and search your media archives.

The Caption Mic concept
Caption Mic creates a caption data stream and a timed text file. A person (voice captioner) trains Caption Mic to recognize their voice and echoes or repeats what is being said at a live or pre-produced event. The resulting captions can be displayed in a variety of manners.

The voice captioner
A person can train to be a voice captioner in a matter of days to weeks. While training the system to recognize their voice (creating a voice profile) is important, equally important is the ability to echo what a speaker or speakers are saying. With diligence every person can create a voice profile. We have found that 60 to 70% of people have the innate ability to echo. Caption Mic voice captioners typically achieve accuracy rates of 95 to 98%.

Applications:

Classroom, Meetings or
Live Events

There are two methods of providing captions using Caption Mic in a classroom setting. The first method is to have the voice captioner sit alongside the student. The voice captioner uses a mask microphone. The mask contains or silences the user’s voice. The student views the captions on the Caption Mic notebook computer (or projected using an LCD projector).

Television - Live

Caption Mic produces a Line 21 VBI caption signal and can be used to produce captions for both live and pre-produced events. This includes emergencies, regularly scheduled broadcasts, local sporting events and paid-programming (church services, local infomercials). Some broadcasters use their ENR system to caption their local news and Caption Mic to caption the unscripted portions (weather, traffic, sports). Caption Mic will interface with your existing caption encoder.
Some broadcasters have used existing staff to act as voice captioners. This has ranged from interns and production assistants to engineering staff and on-air talent.

Television – pre-produced
The voice captioner creates the caption file as if it were a live event. The resulting file is then edited using the ULTECH Caption Wrap post-production caption edit software. With Caption Wrap you can edit the time-code and text errors and encode the captions to your caption master.

Webcast - Live

Caption Mic can be used to produce both live streaming captions and caption metadata for video on demand files. Caption Mic interfaces directly to the VBrick media appliance to produce live captions. Caption Mic can be used with other media appliances that accept a Line 21 caption signal but a Line 21 caption encoder is required.

Church Service

Caption Mic has a feature which is officially called the ‘Live Event Display Sequencer’. Unofficially it is known as the ‘church app’. The sequencer allows you to create a sequence of scripted and unscripted materials. The scripted materials reside as text documents within the Caption Mic computer. As the appropriate section of the program occurs, the captioner either meters out the scripted material in time with the speaker or they voice the unscripted portion.

Live Performance Theatre

Using the Caption Mic ‘Live Event Sequencer’ a captioner can present the scripted material in time with the spoken word. The captions can be displayed on a LED caption display strategically positioned within the theater. Or the captions can be projected or integrated into existing video systems.

This application can also be used for graduation ceremonies or sporting events where the output of Caption Mic can be integrated into arena video systems and / or LED caption displays.
