History of the 87th Quartermaster Detachment (Parachute)

The 87th Quartermaster Detachment was originally constituted on June 10th, 1945 in the United States Army as the 87th Quartermaster Railhead Company. Control was transferred to the War Department on June 17th, 1946.

The unit was redesignated as the 87th Quartermaster Services Detachment on April 29th, 1947 and it was activated May 31st, 1947 in Oifu, Japan. It was assigned to the 8th Army First Corps and eventually inactivated on March 1st, 1948.

The company was redesignated as the 87th Quartermaster Detachment (Supply) and activated on June 1st, 1957 and later inactivated. It was again activated on August 1st, 1962 at Fort Lee, Virginia as the 87th Quartermaster Detachment (PETRL) and it was assigned to the Second U.S. Army.

The detachment was assigned to U.S. Army Pacific Command on August 3rd 1962, and sent to Vietnam on October 6th, 1962. The Detachment was again inactivated on December 26th, 1971 and reactivated on October 16th, 1987 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii as the 87th Quartermaster Detachment (Parachute).

The detachment moved to its present home on Okinawa, Japan on 2 June, 2006.
