Michael K. Lempke

Michael K. Lempke is the Associate Principal Deputy Administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and serves as the Deputy Chief Operating Officer for the Nation’s Nuclear Security Complex.  He also serves as the Associate Administrator for Infrastructure and Operations and is responsible for the integrated, effective and efficient oversight of the Nuclear Security Enterprise through management of the NNSA Site Offices.  In addition, Michael serves as the NNSA’s Senior Internal Affairs Management Official.

He is a member of the U.S. Government’s Senior Executive Service.

Mr. Lempke began his naval career in the enlisted ranks as a Yeoman serving on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations Telecommunications Officer in the Pentagon.  Mr. Lempke received his commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy Supply Corps after completing Officer Candidate School in Pensacola Florida.  During initial training at the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA he was hand selected for service at Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington DC.

During his time at Naval Reactors Headquarters, Mr. Lempke served in the Office of Resource Management and held positions of increasing responsibility.  Ultimately, as the Naval Reactors Director of Acquisitions, Michael was responsible for the formation and defense of nuclear powered warship and reactor plant component budgets, nuclear powered warship maintenance and construction contracts as well as the program’s Management and Operating contracts.  He was responsible for the procurement of two nuclear powered aircraft carriers, development of the acquisition strategy and multi-year procurement of thirteen nuclear powered submarines, personally championed LEAN events to drive efficiencies in the procurement process and developed an acquisition strategy to fundamentally restructure the program’s Management and Operating infrastructure which facilitated process improvements and organizational changes that have resulted in significant, validated and recurring savings.

Immediately prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Lempke served as the Manager of the Naval Reactors Laboratory Field Office.  As Manager, Mr. Lempke supervised a large staff comprised of federal civilian and active duty military employees providing oversight to contractor personnel operating the program’s two dedicated research and development laboratories and their satellite operations.  During his tenure as the Manager, Michael worked to facilitate the administrative consolidation of two previously independent national laboratories and integrate a federal field office with personnel in three states and four separate locations.

Mr. Lempke holds a B.S. in Finance from Arizona State University and a M.S. in Acquisitions from The George Washington University in Washington DC.  He has also completed Graduate Certificate Studies in Negotiation and International Business Management at Georgetown University in Washington DC and is a graduate of the Executive Integral Leadership Program at Notre Dame University.

He lives in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife Amber and their two children, Victoria and Parker.
