Overview: On June 24, 1989, the merchant marine oil tanker M/V Presidente
Rivera ran aground in the Delaware river, near Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania.
Approximately 250,000 gallons of No. 6 fuel oil were spilled.
River and tidal currents spread the spill twenty nine miles along
the Delaware River shoreline affecting New Jersey, Delaware, and
Pennsylvania. Co trustees are NOAA, DOI, DE, NJ (PA settled separately).
Impacts from this incident were restricted vessel traffic, as
well as park and fishery closures, the commercial blue crab fishery
was closed for 23 days. Shoreline clean-up and skimming recovered
about 55% of the oil.
