Cognitive Science of Learning Program

This is an applied (6.2) research program addressing instructional research issues of importance to Naval training. Currently the program emphasizes the transition of artificially intelligent tutoring technology into practical Naval training applications by supporting exemplary applications that can be expected to lead the way to wider application of the technology. These projects also incorporate investigations of research questions such as the comparative value of alternative instructional strategies and/or the investigation of human tutoring behavior in the domain of the ICAI project. The most recent program direction involves research on coaching strategies for fast-moving, dynamically evolving military tasks.

Projects that simply involve the development of training systems, without a significant research component, are not supported by this program.
