Internships with Montana FWP

An internship is a short-term work experience in which a college student applies what they have learned in college to the world of work. This learning experience usually involves applying for a position that relates to their major/minor. The student usually receives academic credit and a grade through their curriculum department.

Eligibility

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Internship Program is open to any student currently enrolled in an accredited university/college. This includes all public, private, community, vo-tech and Native American institutions of higher learning.

Pay

Many college students, especially biology and park/recreation majors, are required to complete an internship prior to graduation. Fish, Wildlife & Parks has opportunities available in these and many other fields, but the positions vary each year. Most are paid positions, but some are volunteer only. Interns must secure their own housing and transportation to the work site.

Dates

Internships can be done all year around, however, the majority take place during the months of April-September. The length varies depending on the project that needs to be completed and the timeframe required to get it done. Positions are located statewide.

Intern Announcements

Students must be currently enrolled in a university/college.

NOTICE: Student interns must have a valid driver’s license to drive a state vehicle. They also must have current vehicle insurance if they drive their personal vehicle during their internship. Students who are not Montana residents will need to acquire a valid montana driver’s license within 60 days of starting the internship, if they are required to drive a state vehicle as part of their internship.

Interns are hired through the college where they are currently enrolled. Out-of-state applicants need to verify beforehand that their college will accept the standard Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks intern contract. If not, the student will be required to enroll for at least one credit at a college in Montana.
