Narrator: Day Two at the Office of Naval Research Science and Technology Partnership Conference at Washington, DC, featured a keynote address by LtGen George Flynn, just back from Iraq, who underscored the importance of science and technology for the warfighter.

LtGen Flynn: We’re a fighting and thinking and adapting enemy. You always have to be out there looking for the game changer. You know there are the enemies out there doing S&T so there almost has to be a red team or a red cell on the science and technology as what is the game changer.

Narrator: The conference provided a perfect opportunity for participants to come together and exchange innovative ideas on meeting warfighter needs.

Flagg: I think one of the primary advantages that this conference has brought to the table is that when you really do have 1300 people sitting around in a space together daring about the same thing, you really do get innovation.

Boyd: The partnership opportunities here are all based on relationships that you establish with the different ONR representatives, but there’s an important piece as well with industry that we’re seeking partnerships. It’s a good way to leverage each other and do more for the warfighter.

Narrator: Conference attendees also had the opportunity to pitch their idea to an ONR Principal

Morrison, Deputy Department Head, Code 35: Pitch a Principal’s main focus is your chance to one-on-one have a discussion with us, the research program officers responsible for doing naval S&T. It gives you a chance to do it in a manner where you’re one-on-one. It’s a personal inter-relationship between you and the program officer – someone like myself or my fellow program officers.

Narrator: Through the CNR Challenge competition, ONR is offering a total of $1m for innovative technology ideas.

Narrator: The conference concludes Thursday with technical sessions and a Marine Corp panel on S&T’s future.
