Aspiring Scientists Aboard!
Outreach Program Gives Students Hands-On Experience
In mid-May, two separate groups of students were given a hands-on learning opportunity aboard NEFSC's James J. Howard Laboratory’s R/V Nauvoo.
Students from the New Jersey Academy of Aquatic Sciences (NJAAS) participated in a program designed for aspiring scientists. The outreach program's objective is to expose urban students to marine science as a career through field work, including on-the-water sampling for marine life and habitat quality. The NJAAS students' two-day program included vessel safety training, a tour of lab facilities, and a study of habitat characterization of the Shrewsbury River and Sandy Hook Bay.
Students from New York Harbor School’s Vessel Operations and AP Biology classes spent an afternoon aboard the R/V Nauvoo learning about the vessel's systems, engineering, and operation, and the marine habitats of New York Harbor. During these trips Nauvoo was docked at the South Street Seaport Museum in lower Manhattan and students boarded the vessel at the schools dock on Governors’ Island, NY.
The NJAAS along with the Adventure Aquarium in Camden is a partner in the Coastal America network of Coastal Learning Education Centers. On behalf of NOAA Fisheries and the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, the Sandy Hook lab has pledged to support educational activities at the Academy and Aquarium.
