Verifying SSI recipients’ financial account information

Why does Social Security need to verify a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipient's financial account information?

To be eligible for SSI a person must not have more than $2,000 in countable resources. A married couple must not have more than $3,000 in countable resources.
