Cultural Considerations / Religion

Religion plays a strong role in daily family and community life:

• A majority of Spanish speakers are Roman Catholic.
  
• Many in Hispanic cultures may believe in metaphysical powers and/or other faiths as well.
  
• Hispanics may link achievement to spiritual workings or fate instead of their own ability.
  
• Patron saint days may be seen as more important than birthdays.

How You Can Respond:

• Form partnerships with churches and other religious/spiritual organizations.
  
• Be aware and respectful of the central role religion may play in a client’s decision-making.
  
• Be sensitive to religious holidays and observances.
