US Department of Labor to provide training and re-employment assistance to workers affected by closure of Associated Grocers of Maine in Gardiner

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $337,897 grant to assist about 60 workers affected by the closure of Associated Grocers of Maine Inc. in Gardiner, Maine. The grocery distributor announced in April that it would be shutting down its distribution, logistics and transportation operations, and consequently laying off all of its employees.

"This grant will help these individuals who lost their jobs through no fault of their own obtain support and training to find employment in growing industries," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

Awarded to the Maine Department of Labor, the grant will be operated by the Central/Western Maine Workforce Investment Board. Employment and training services to be provided will focus on industries that support local needs.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
