Background
ORNL DAAC worked with Jeff Morisette, John Dwyer, Steve Running, Crystal Shaaf, and the FLUXNET validation communities to choose sites and to identify the land products needed for validation. We also worked with MODAPS on subsetting the Land Products and with the Land Quality Assessment Team to provide quality information.Regional MODIS Images: MODIS Land Products (200-km x 200-km scenes containing the EOS Land Validation Core sites) are being routinely extracted and processed by MODAPS and transferred to the Land Processes DAAC for archival. These images provide the regional context for the field site. The Land Processes DAAC places these 200-km x 200-km images on their FTP site; these files are in native HDF-EOS format and either Integerized Sinusoidal (I-Sin) projections for Collection 3 or Sinusoidal projection for Collection 4.
Tower/Field Site Images:Full MODIS scenes (1200-km x 1200-km) are initially subset to 11-km x 31-km (Collection 4) or 25-km x 25-km (Collection 5) by the MODAPS; these initial subsets contain the field site or flux tower. Reformatting and additional subsetting to 7-km x 7-km containing the field site or flux tower are done by the ORNL DAAC.
