Event 4: Mass Casualty Care: Overlooked Community Resources

Web Conference


Broadcast May 17, 2005, this Web conference explored the key issues surrounding the utilization of alternative community resources in a mass casualty event. It highlighted the Department of Health and Human Services' mass casualty care priorities, activities, and initiatives, as well as innovative research, tools, and models that can be used in developing effective preparedness strategies for using community resources

While listening to the audio, you can also access the individual PowerPoint® slide presentations and manually move through the slides referred to by each presenter. There is a text version of each slide presentation as well as a text transcript of the entire audio portion of the conference.

Program Objectives

This program was designed to:

  • Examine the role of nursing homes, former (shuttered or closed) hospitals, rehabilitation centers and other outpatient care centers as potential care sites in a mass casualty event.
  • Explore the inclusion of primary care centers and clinics into community-wide emergency preparedness plans.
  • Identify State regulations that may affect the conversions of former hospitals into temporary hospitals for low-acuity patients.
  • Highlight a needs assessment tool that could be used to incorporate nursing homes into preparedness strategies.
  • Discuss the development of a guidebook for preparedness planners considering conversion of former hospitals.

Conference Sessions

PowerPoint® files can be viewed with Microsoft® PowerPoint® or with a free PowerPoint® Viewer.

Playback Tips

  • These streaming video presentations demand a lot from your computer's resources. You may find that the streaming video works better if you close other applications and windows on your computer.
  • To adjust audio levels slide the button in the lower right corner.
  • To start, pause, or stop playback, use the buttons in the left corner.
  • To jump ahead in the session, use the slider at the bottom.

Software Requirements

To access the audio clips, you will need Real® player software installed on your computer. To download a free RealOne® player, go to http://www.real.com and select "Free RealOne® Player." Check the minimum requirements for each for your system; if you are a Macintosh or Unix/Linux user, select the player appropriate for your computer.

Follow the instructions provided for download and installation. If you are unsure of where you saved it on your computer, select "Start" on your navigation bar, then "Find," and search for "Real." When you find the folder, look for the "Set-Up" box, select that, and the installation will begin.
