U.S. theater experts – director Michael Unger, choreographer Patty Colombo and composer Greg
Opelka – staged Kalman’s “Duchess of Chicago” at Sverdlovsk Academic Theater of Musical Comedy
May 25. The production was part of the Musical Theater’s American Spring, another “American Seasons
in Russia” project that fell under the auspices of the U.S.-Russian Bilateral Presidential Commission.
As U.S. Vice Consul Zsofia Budai mentioned in her opening remarks, this kind of cooperation leads to
better understanding between nations and brings our cultures closer together. Both nights of the
long-expected musical show were greeted by fully booked halls. Exceptional choreography, gorgeous
costumes and decorations, beautiful music and singing, and fine stage direction made this musical
a world class premier. The show ended with a standing ovation and a touching scene of American
producers hugging their Russian colleagues and actors. Russian audiences will be able to see this
musical through the 2012/2013 theatrical season.
