Aloha Military Families and Students - welcome to the AMFAS website!

students ready to learnThis site was developed by the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE), and the School Liaison Offices of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines in Hawaii in cooperation with the Hawaii State Department of Education. AMFAS is an information center for military families transitioning in Hawaii Public Schools.

Hawaii’s unique location in the Pacific Ocean established our islands as the military hub of the Pacific. With Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy base installations located on Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island, and the Pacific Component Commands headquartered on Oahu, Hawaii supports the 300,000 plus service personnel and their families. About 15,000 military dependents, representing about 8% of the total student enrollment, attend public schools.

Inouye, the Joint Venture Education Forum (JVEF) was established in 1999 as a partnership between the HIDOE, military, and community stakeholders as a venue to address mutual concerns through meaningful discussion and relationships to promote educational opportunities for Hawaii’s children. In addition to the active duty components, the HIDOE supports activities and programs that support the Hawaii National Army and Air Guard.

The HIDOE and military partnerships have a positive impact on public schools, support for military families and children, and increased community for both cultures. In 2002, JVEF recognized need to establish a military liaison serve as a point of contact on schools, families, and students. After extensive lobbying by the JVEF military community, Military Impacted Principal Council, and Board of Education (BOE) - the HIDOE Military Liaison position was passed by the Hawaii State Legislature in 2004. Along with the SLO, the HIDOE Military Liaison serves as the point of contact for all military families transitioning to and from Hawaii’s schools.

If you are planning on transitioning to Hawaii or have questions regarding Hawaii Public Schools, please contact the DOE Military Liaison, Cherise Imai, or your service School Liaison Officer for assistance.
