Chairman Menendez’s Statement on Third North Korean Nuclear Test
February 12, 2013
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement regarding North Korea’s announcement of a third nuclear test:
"This provocative and irresponsible act by Pyongyang poses a challenge to peace and stability in Asia, is a clear violation of international law and numerous UN Security Council resolutions, and demands a firm response by the international community. North Korea must understand that its actions have consequences, and I intend to introduce legislation to condemn this act, call upon the international community to take action so that North Korea pays a price for its continued reckless behavior, and for the United States to take appropriate steps to safeguard our interests and those of our allies and partners.
“These tests will only further isolate North Korea. Pyongyang will not find acceptance unless it abandons the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivery. This irresponsible act undermines the prospect for peace in the region, and will do nothing for North Korea's security or for its people."
