Privatized Housing Unaccompanied Housing Housing in the Local Community

Housing in the Local Community
The Housing Referral Services Office (HRSO) provides all DoD personnel with personalized services to assist in locating suitable housing in the local community. Although moving is sometimes stressful, it can also be an exciting opportunity to live off base and experience a new location. The HRSO will assist you every step of the way to help you find your new home in the local community.

Housing Services
Contact the HRSO as soon as you know you are moving. The Government Housing team will provide you the latest information on the local housing situation and offer complete referral and relocation services to assist you in finding a quality place to live.

Support services include in/out processing, personal one-on-one counseling assistance in locating temporary and permanent off-base housing, accepting and providing rental and sales listings, maps and directions, processing utility deposit waivers, certifying permissive TDY for house hunting, processing requests for local moves and/or non-temporary storage of household goods, helping members understand their lease agreements and the necessity for a military release clause, mediating and/or assisting in resident and landlord dispute resolution, and other assisted services.

The HRSO partners with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the San Antonio Apartment Association, and various property managers, landlords and realtors to ensure that you receive the most current information about the local housing market. The HRSO also monitors housing units offered for rent to the military community, listed in the Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN), a joint service, DoD-sponsored website that offers a 24/7/365 single source of available housing to incoming military personnel and their families.

Go to AHRN.com and create a personal account to view the available housing and get a feel for the size, style and type of housing around your new installation. The listings provide contact information for the landlord or property manager so you can connect with them to discuss available units. Contact the HRSO prior to making any firm commitments or if you have any questions.

Community Housing Units
With the local cost of living 5.5% below the national average, the cost of living in San Antonio is the lowest among large U.S. cities. Due to reasonable land costs, favorable city regulations and fees, buying a home is affordable. For information about the housing allowances that financially support your move, see Referral and Relocation Assistance.

Personal Property Insurance
You need to obtain legal liability and personal property insurance for your possessions and should choose the options and amounts that best fit your needs and lifestyle. You will find helpful information at the following links:

- Texas Department of Insurance
- Homeowners Insurance
- Renters Insurance

Before purchasing your insurance, please consult the HRSO for more information about coverage.

School Information
For families, we understand that where your children attend school plays a large factor in the decision of where to live. For your convenience, all community housing listings in the Automated Housing Referral Network site (AHRN.com) include a link to schools in the area surrounding the listed house. You can use the links below for information on schools in the area.
