Information Center

Patrick Henry Elementary Information Center (IC) provides an open, flexible schedule where students, faculty and staff have the opportunity throughout the school day to use information resources for research, to select books to read for pleasure, and to meet and work with others.

Teachers and Information Specialist meet collaboratively to plan activities that teach information skills while integrating the classroom curriculum. The Information Specialists assist the teachers in finding the appropriate resources and technology to match content and student needs.

Here at PHES we have two full time Information Specialists (IS). One of our IS's works primarily with third through fifth grade students and teachers. The preschool through second grades students and teachers are assisted by our other IS. For these students the DoDEA Early Childhood guidelines provide a framework for the development of age-level appropriate activities that encourage a love of reading and beginning research skills.

Students have access to the IC daily to exchange books and use resources. Activities are scheduled with individuals, small groups, and whole classes as needed. Classroom units of study are planned with the IS searching for books, computer programs, videos, web resources, and professional materials to match lesson objectives.

Literacy activities include book selection skills, author/illustrator study, genre study, and the Reading Counts program.

Reading Advocacy is supported by displays, bulletin boards, center activities, and author/storyteller visits.

Research skills taught include using Library World Explorer, on-line databases, and the internet, as well as locating Everybody, Fiction, Nonfiction, and reference materials in the IC.

The IC staff works to identify up-to-date resources to support the curriculum. We constantly work to improve the quality and quantity of our IC resources. Our IC has over 22,000 books, 1700 videos and DVD's, and 530 CD's.

A variety of technology based tools are available for check out to the staff including digital cameras, video cameras, a PC based laptop, video projectors, a TV and VCR, and a large screen TV with DVD and VCR. Production facilities include copy machines, black-and-white and color laser printers, Ellison dies and machines, paper cutters, long staplers, saddle staplers, and a laminator.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to come at any time to utilize and check-out our materials any time during the day. Parents are especially encouraged also to come with their children after school on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 14:30 - 15:30 to select materials together.

Volunteers are welcomed and are and essential part of our program. Please call, or come by the IC for more information. An advantage of volunteering is that you have the opportunity to become familiar with out collection, including new materials as they arrive
